Sometimes one sees quotes from Augustine allegedly against the overly literal interpretation of Genesis.

The problem is, Augustine was still a YEC who believed in the literal Adam and Eve and for whom it was clear that the Biblical genealogies establish the age of the Earth at around 6000 years. No, literalism (of admittedly varying degrees) is not some fundie invention. It’s been there from the start.
