I think the right wing is hell-bent on launching an actual, literal progrom against American Muslims. This will seem alarmist to some but keep in mind that I am close to the rwnj heartland and get to see them in action every day.
One factor that is especially frightening: In areas like Lubbock or the DFW exurbs, many local Muslims are doctors, engineers, and wealthy entrepreneurs. They own a lot of local investment property and live almost hedge to hedge with crazed Islamophobe gun fetishists. What happens when the official extortion rackets that pass for police in much of the hinterland start to think they can use “civil asset forfeiture” to seize all that nice juicy Muslim-owned property? This could happen in response to another incident like the Boston bombing, and it could happen anywhere in the country since it is RWNJ dogma that the entire Islamic faith is a terrorist monolith.
The long arm of federal law would move quickly to counter any such effort, of course, but that may not keep the ‘phobes from trying. A sizable fraction of RWNJs already believe that local sheriffs essentially have nullification powers against federal and state law and some sheriffs believe it themselves. They also have years of fantasy gun humper indoctrination and the very real example of Bundy Ranch to convince them that they can in fact defy the federal courts and law enforcement and even resist the national army. They will be crushed, of course, but with considerable bloodshed and a legacy of bitterness that will last for centuries.
