An extremely polarizing figure who came into a pretty bad situation and made it a lot better for a lot of people. The rest of the people, not so much… but it’s not obvious even in hindsight that things could be fixed for the entire population.

As I understand the history from afar, anyway. I was in diapers at the time.

Part of the reason Thatcher’s hated is that she went out of the way to blame poor people for being poor and the jobless for being jobless, while implementing policy that made it harder for them to be anything but poor and jobless.

She also governed during one of those flare-ups of British nationalism where you could get away with more if you attacked a brown person..though she herself stayed at arm’s distance, though her opinion on saving South Africa from the vengeful communist blacks was pretty clear…and she was an innovator in accusing gay people of being predatory dangers to society.
