(Basically, at this point in time, I would be loath to believe the Iranians were actually first-striking unless the Ayatollah went on live TV to take blame, and possibly not even then).

I think one of our pipsqueak “allies” in the Gulf is behind this. Divers attaching limpet mines in port is gangster stuff, ridiculously unconvincing as well as risky. There is no reason at all the Iranians would do it even if they did want to attack. We have actual Russian torpedoes and sea mines like the ones the Iranians use. We could do a lot better if we wanted to fake an Iranian attack.
