Romney not signing the pledge makes sense from his perspective, even leaving for a moment its craziness. He’s making his move in New Hampshire, not Iowa, so signing wouldn’t help him at his point of primary (pardon the pun) effort. Moreover, refusing to sign let’s him stand up to a loony wingnut and thus curry favor with the independents he’ll need to win in November. If he’s able to win the primaries without getting pulled too far to the right, he gives himself a better shot. Romney and his staff are thinking several moves ahead. I’d wager they’re better chess players than Bachmann and her staff.
