Isolation’s been a disaster every time the US has tried to practice it. Whether we wish to admit it or not, we’re too big and important a nation to simply cocoon ourselves in our own worries and assume the rest of the world will either leave us alone or negotiate on fair terms.

Interestingly, that’s Mark Steyn’s critique of Ron Paul right there. Steyn argues it exactly as you do, that America is simply too powerful and too rich to for the world to “just leave us alone”. He extends that, to a lesser degree, to Canada and the UK as well, and it fits Australia, too.

New Zealand, however, likely is small enough to be able to opt for the quiet life.
