I said I would be shocked if he got over 50% of the vote not that it was impossible. Remember also that there are a lot more Democratic secretaries of states that will be looking over the results in 2020 than there were in 2016. I see nothing that suggests that Trump will get over 50% of the popular vote at this time.

But he doesn’t need 50% of the popular vote — after all Hillary received only 48% of the popular vote, while soundly defeating Trump by almost 3 million votes. He wants to receive a plurality so he can claim that more people supported him than any of the other candidates.
