And in case my last statement was overly harsh: I know there are many, many, many good, kind-hearted, liberal German people for whom the swing their country is taking is heartbreaking. I’m not collectively blaming Germans. But these polls, and these statements, are stating that Germany is going to reject anyone who will not conform to being a German Christian.

As a German Jew, I am concerned. However, I would encourage everyone to take anything written about the supposed rise of xenophobia in Germany with a massive grain of salt. Sensationalist headlines on this topic have been used to sell newspapers around the world almost since the end of the war. Meanwhile, the far right political party (NDP) got a total of 1.5% of the vote in last year’s national election. Compare this with the performance of far right parties in virtually every other country in Europe.
