Even this story alone should have the GOP’s hair turning white. This is a “must-win” state for both candidates, for Romney to maintain his “inevitability” cred, and for Santorum to end Romney’s “inevitability,” and yet they’re stuck in a dead heat in the last hours.

Really, the only way Romney could come away tonight looking good is if he got a solid win, but I just don’t see it happening. If he wins tonight, it’s gonna be within 5% of the vote, which means tomorrow people are gonna be asking why they should vote for a guy who can’t even put the competition away on his own home turf.

I think one mistake Romney may have made was playing along with the whole “home state” thing. I mean, yes, he was born and mostly raised in Michigan, but he has basically had nothing to do with it since he was a teenager. Yes, his dad was a popular governor, but that was almost 45 years ago. I just don’t see his links with the state being all that strong and just makes this whole angle a liability.
