I’d say Trump is stupid and he doesn’t CARE what he’s doing, beyond benefits for himself and his family.

Thoroughly agree on the conman skillset, but a lot of it works because he’s such an entitled prick that he doesn’t have to play-act resentment, and resentment is the core of Trumpism, as it was of the Tea Party. And he doesn’t have to play-act the simplemindedness of his/their views on pretty much everything.
