re: #226 BeachDem

As a really old old, I remember landlines before answering machines. (Damn I’m old.) When I would have company and the phone would ring, I would just let it ring. My guests would say, “Why aren’t you answering it?” I would respond, “I’m talking with you, so whoever it is can call back when I can talk to them.”

Startling, I know. I have to say that these days when I am out with people and they spend their time scrolling through their cell phones, I get pissed off. They don’t even engage when you’re face to face with them—dog forbid they miss some crap somebody has posted on facebook.

And furthermore—get off my lawn.

I admit I watch sports on TV quite a lot. It always amazes me to watch the crowd shots and how many people are looking down at their smart phones and not watching the event they are at.

My favorite thing ever though was watching three young ladies in downtown Columbus walking with each other and all three were on their phones talking. They were approaching an intersection and the walk light changed as did the stop light. All three together walked out into the intersection not noticing anything and just about got hit by a car.

They couldn’t even have one of them aware enough to warn the others.

Connected or disconnected?

Ahhh…this is the Modern World.
