I really get tired of this line. The 2009 median household income of NYC - not the nation, but NYC - was $55,554 according to the Census bureau.

Basically, for the past 30 years, the US has slashed services that the “middle class” used to rely on. Public education (for your kids), Medicare and Social Security (for your retired parents). All to cut tax rates for the rich.

And now, people who used to be very well off are finding that they’re screwed because they can’t afford to send their kids to Harvard or to keep their parents in decent care.

It’s really sad, but the worst part is that those people are still far, far better off than the large majority of Americans.
