I always thought that the ridiculously over-the top moral code was a fairly arbitrary plot point which George Lucas had to throw into cannon when he realised he’d effectively created an order of super-warriors, able to subjugate the galaxy at the drop of a hat.

Their moral code was ridiculous and not even applied well, plus even the use of their powers in combat situations was sporadic. In the beginning of the movie, Jin and Obi Wan use the force to sprint at super speeds thru the Trade Federation ship, but some how, Obi Wan forgets he can move at super speeds when it comes time to fight Darth Maul, gets stuck behind the conveniently timed force field and Jin dies.
