I mean, look at my other fave Presidents: Abe Lincoln and TR. Flawed, crazy mutants. Say something awesome one day, say something suckily the next. Do something awesome one day, do something lame the next.

This is what made the John Adams HBO series so good. They touched on all the personal, human stuff that went on, rather than just paint-by-numbers history. I came away with the distinct impression of TJ as a Romantic, a bit of a fantasist imagining a perfect world of rich white guys just like himself, living on little business farms, free to do whatever their hearts desired. A brilliant writer, very intellectual, but a self-blind hypocrite and yes, maybe a bit of a dick to everyone, even his friends. As a professional self-absorbed a-hole myself, I felt like I recognized a bit of me in him.

Adams probably still doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
