Except without the knife in frame, then the question becomes “Is he really afraid of them?” The argument would be raised that he was in fact afraid of others who were attacking him, but those in the shot are there to protect him. By taking the knife out of the picture, you give the room to argue that this is actually a picture of mercy on the part of the “activists” than proof of just how dangerous they truly were.

Exactly, and the man’s mouth is opened so he’s obviously in pain, he has obvious wounds, stabbed in the stomach and a man is standing next to him with a knife! Did he JUST stab him? Looks like it to me. In fact, the way they’re holding his arm, it looks like he probably just collapsed which you don’t get without the full picture.
