that’s true, it may be a wash numerically.
but they are not equivalent expenses by the nature of who controls them

the first set are employer costs now being paid by the employee.
these are somewhat hidden and so i’d argue arent getting enough attention

the second always were personal costs
you can often choose how to get to work and how much you’re willing to pay for convenience vs time.
they are generally not part of a salary negotiation.
if i can and do switch from car to bus or bicycle my employer doesnt care and likely wont pay me differently.
no different than if i move closer to work and can now walk, or move to the ‘burbs and choose to drive and pay tolls.

its a small thing, mostly unnoticed
it’s what i do
the irs tightened the home office deduction a few years ago
sure most people wouldnt qualify anyway
so there’s not even a tax deduction/advantage
