Whatever plans the US military might have to come to the aid of freedom-loving Iranians, are unfortunately in the hands of someone who won’t lift a finger.

I think you’re right. Seems to me that there are only two options: foreign intervention or the military (not paramilitary like Basij etc.) turning against the government.

I think many posters here know more about US history than I do, so humor me. Are there any examples of the US successfully arming a resistance against a dictatorial government that didn’t become a debacle? We armed the Muhjiadeen without installing a government for them and the Taliban came along. The overthrowing of Mossadegh in Iran left a bitter taste with some Iranians, but I don’t know how sensitive their tastebuds are anymore.
