It’s not just third world. I’ve seen some pathetic girls on the streets of what had been the eastern sector of Berlin. It’s an uncomfortable fact that some sizable fraction of the working girl community, even in the West, is underage and not by just months. Overlapping this, a sizable fraction are slaves. Outright slaves, owned and bought and sold. The police, in those places, bought too, from a certain perspective.

Since it’s all illegal, and it happens anyhow, it’s hard to figure what more can be done. As we think about whether to modify our own laws regarding prostitution, some caution is in order. The business has its more than unsavory side.

All excellent points. I guess my own question is always, are we protecting sex workers from predators by making it illegal, or not?
