I recall learning about science and the scientific method in the fifth or sixth grade: how you starts with a hypothesis and then test it to see if it qualifies as a theory.

We were also taught just what science can and cannot do, namely nothing that goes beyond independent, empirical proof.

When people fail to learn these distinctions and confuse scientific theory with the more popular definition of it, then any discussion of science in general is going to spin down a rathole.
