I don’t defend the Ugandan government’s anti-gay policies, but they have put great efforts into opposing al Shattab in Somalia, and their troops are some of the few forces in the Central African Republic that have been able to really work to create local stability. To abandon forces that do such good and important work strikes me as madness. It would be condemning thousands to death in order to show sympathy.

The Ugandan anti-gay law was a monstrosity, and efforts to pass it back into law should be opposed. But opposed in the right way, quietly, not with loud protests and threats of aid cuts that simply make Ugandans feel they’re being bullied.

It was passed, they just took the death penalty off the table for now, currently you only get life in prison…
