They’re shrinking, and they know it, even if they’re reluctant to admit it. It’s what feeds their persecution complex and stokes their fears; the fact that their power is waning and there’s precious little they can do about it.

Thus queuing all the parallel references to 1860 - when another group of oligarchs started seeing their power and control slip away. And threatening tantrums were no longer getting other parts of the party to give in to them on every issue.
