I do like Johnson, in spite of Vietnam. He got a lot of good accomplished, and was willing to take long term damage for Civil Rights.

Johnson was Liberal, no two ways about it. The CRA, the VRA, Medicare, the Great Society - that’s the part of his legacy that is often forgotten by other Liberals. Poor bastard’s stuck with Vietnam.

Like a lot of things that turn out to be a Really Bad Idea, it “made sense at the time”. Most folks not on the far left of that time accepted the Domino Theory, that we had to stop Communism from taking over any more countries. We thought we were defending freedom from Godless Communism, and ended up supporting a puppet regime against a popular insurrection. Escalation? The Pentagon was telling him every step of the way that we were winning and just needed a little more to push it over the top.
