I have a friend who’s not a citizen of this country, and because the country she’s from (Peru) has had issues with a Maoist Insurgency, her telephone conversations were monitored for a period of time in 2002. Mind you, Both her and I were in the United States, and in theory should not have been monitored, however, by Law the PATRIOT act requires anyone who’s wiretapped to be notified After the fact.

I have no idea what conversations or were or were not recorded, and while none of the conversations were illegal in nature… some of them were interesting (she was my GF…we’ll leave it at that). So right now, for all I know there could be conversations I had recorded and wandering out there for the amusement and tittilation of others.

It’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things but to me, it’s the Principle that neither one of us were engaged in anything illegal, nor was there evidence that there could be, but because the country had the Shining Path operating in it, she was automatically a suspect and had her conversations eavesdropped.
