I don’t think these men could build these bombs without training. Historically bomb makers without someone to teach them blow themselves up, or at least lose a finger.

This sounds more like fictional trope than fact. The components of a black powder equivalent bomb are easy to acquire and assemble, everything necessary from the powder to the electronic matches or fuses can be ordered over the internet. There’s no need for an unstable booster explosive and bp equivalent propellants like Pyrodex are incredibly heat and shock insensitive. The electronic match is common to model rocketry and can be easily tested independent of the assembled bomb. Also using an electronic match totally avoids the one common fatal mistake made in creating this kind of device, as there’s no fuse hole to drill.
