Appeasement is mocked in the hindsight of history, but during the 1930s, England and France faced the prospect of having a war and nobody showing up. The unprecedented casualties of WWI were still fresh in everybody’s mind, people expected cities to be wiped off the map in the next war, and nobody wanted to do it all over again for Czechoslovakia.
