re: #249 Anymouse

As I have noted before, my mother refused to vote as a veteran. She takes the “military is subservient to the civilian government” indoctrination very seriously. She takes it seriously enough that as a veteran herself, she felt she should not even consider voting for the civilians who run the government.

She was disappointed and upset that as a veteran I ran for election to my village board. It took her a couple years to accept that as a veteran myself I should represent my community on the city council.

She registered to vote for her first time to vote for Hillary Clinton and Tammy Duckworth.

I don’t have any issue with veterans voting - after all, you don’t give up your citizenship by serving! - and of course I’m a big believer in veterans health and education benefits. The thing that bothers me is the GOP’s argument that veterans should have an outsized voice in elections.

Unless, of course, they support Democrats, in which case “they probably never served or were just REMFs”. That has to be the most disgusting facet of the Right Wing’s worship of the military, that veterans are only to be worshipped when they agree with them.
