My grandparents’ house in WI was hit in 2000. They were home and didn’t get to the basement in time - it formed right nearby, and by the time they realized it, the wind had blown in the doors near the entrances to the basement and they couldn’t get down there.

Fortunately they only lost the tin off the roof (! - with the subsequent 3” of rain, yeah, the house pretty much got redone) and they weren’t hurt. They did end up having to clear cut close to 50 acres of forest, because of the trees downed.

The lumber sale did pay for the extension to the house.
