-40 C is about the coldest it ever gets here, but it does happen (or close enough) every January. People generally don’t start breaking out winter gear until the days hit around 0 C.
The evenings here have been <0C for a couple of weeks. People are thinking about digging out the winter clothes.
I’ve seen people from up north pull fish out of an ice fishing hole with bare hands. Not sure I could do that.
On the other hand, I don’t think I could deal with the heat the southern States gets either.
