Holland was a wild Irishman. He started as a Christian Brother math teacher, but medicaled out. After the US government turned down his sub designs, he was funded (sometimes) by the Fenians, who are thus the godfathers of the modern submarine.

One of my favorite family stories from my Irish grandmother (RIP) was everything about the Fenian Invasion of Canada in 1866 (in which, allegedly, several of my great and very grand uncles, cousins, whatever, partook).
