I was lumping in the 31% who “simply don’t know what to believe” with the creationists, because that honestly reads to me like people who either don’t give enough of a damn either way or do believe in one, but are afraid to openly voice it for fear of being ostracized.

Ah, OK. The 31 percent could go in any direction. My first inclination would be that they just don’t care or give it any thought. They could also be conflicted not leaning in one direction or another. I imagine there could be something like a hybrid of thought where a person can be part evolutionist and part creationist.
