I thought I remembered that as well, that it seemed backwards but wanted to ask here to make sure. I need a heavier weight florist wire and didn’t want to order a wrong thing.

My first encounter with wire gauges was needing wire for a small paperclay armature. When I started buying colored “art” wire it became even more important. Even if the explanation was wrong, it sure is a good way to remember.

Random bit of trivia: Most standard paperclips are about 20 gauge, which makes a good reference point that pretty much everyone is familiar with.
