My understanding is one could be as small as a central air conditioning unit as one might find on the side of ones home.

Even back in the 70’s a tactical atomic (fission) device, as opposed to a nuclear (fusion) one, was small enough to fit into a medium sized suitcase and be light enough for a single person to carry with some difficulty. The refinement of firing and timing electronics have reduced the weight and size needed.

Atomic fission devices are what was dropped on Japan, fusion, AKA hydrogen, devices use a fission device to initiate the fusion process.
