OT, and I don’t want to derail the thread, but- can anyone give me the Cliff Notes version of the Jewish concept of an afterlife? I have friends who are Christian converts whose father is Jewish and dying.

Yes, Jews believe in an afterlife. Souls are judged according to the deeds they did during their lives. There is a “purgatory” (which can include reincarnation) for sins not repented, then eternal happiness for all good deeds performed.
