If the medical report on Zimmerman is accurate— and it certainly matches up with what we’ve seen in the video and other photos— he was very minorly injured. That’s not what you get if you just keep hitting a guy and hitting a guy.

If that is what it takes to be in fear for your life, that level of injury, than that basically allows the use of lethal force in any fistfight.

Especially if Zimmerman were calling for help, knowing he’s in a highly populated community and that someone will probably come quickly.

There’s also the possibility that he feared that Martin, upon seeing his gun, would go for the gun and then shoot him. There is absolutely no way to verify such a claim, and given that SYG does not require proportionality in the use of force, and eliminates the requirement to avoid a fatal outcome, SYG may very well get him off.

From what I understand, there should be a preliminary hearing to determine the viability of a SYG defense. It will be interesting to see the outcome; I have to wonder if the case may simply be dismissed at that point.
