re: #261 sagehen
All of it comes down to Jefferson and Hamilton hated each other.
Jefferson owned people, Hamilton thought that shouldn’t be allowed.
Jefferson was a rapist, Hamilton a seducer.
Jefferson wanted an agrarian feudalist nation, Hamilton wanted an urban mercantile society.
Jefferson played violin, Hamilton was a rapper (/s).
Both of them were great writers. You’d think conservatives should love Hamilton; he founded the Bank of New York, the Stock Exchange and the NY Post. But he hated slavery, so conservatives have to lean towards Jefferson.
I first heard this here on LGF I believe and I use it with friends but modern liberals want Jeffersonian goals by Hamiltonian means and conservatives want Hamiltonian goals by Jeffersonian means. I am glad that Lin-Manuel Miranda made his Hamilton play because I came away with an appreciation of Hamilton for all his warts when I took American history in college. He was a flawed guy and a bit of a prick but I do think a very intelligent founding father that had a lot more foresight about our economic future than Jefferson had. I’m glad history remembers him more than just that guy that Aaron Burr shot.
