Not sure, but definitely it seems to be very bad news when used for cosmetic reasons. From the tanning bed wikipedia article:

I know people who will use them prior to going on vacation to Southern climes. They say they don’t burn that way because “they’ve built up a base”.

That sort of makes sense to me—I prefer sunscreen, it’s cheaper and no tan-lines.
