With the exception of my mother, every one of my maternal grandmother’s children has divorced at least once. The record was held by my mother’s elder sister, who managed to go through four marriages in her life. Used to joke that she had a mission to rival Liz Taylor for number of divorces. In a case of cosmic irony, she died a few months after Taylor did.

I come from a family of 6 kids. One of my sisters singlehandedly brought our family up to the national average for divorces. She’s always attracted to the wrong guy.
