People want cheap eats. People want quick eats. People want prepackaged eats. People may want to eat healthy, but those competing interests run into each other. Consider that fresh fruit and vegies are more expensive than many canned varieties and other food choices such that people on limited budgets are going to trade one for another.

Throw in government directives to eat certain foods or avoid certain foods (that later turn out to be not the best food options after all), and you’ve got mass confusion and a public that consumes far more than they should based on a sedentary lifestyle.

Top among all issues should be portion control. No matter what you’re talking about - reducing the overall size of portions should be key.

You’ve hit on a lot of points here that make the issue so complex. I’d also add a general decline in people knowing how to cook even the most basic of things or cook in a cheap way, especially from fresher and less processed ingredients. I don’t think there is any one factor that has led to this but I do think it is part of it. For people that do cook it can seem really weird, how can people not know? It’s not rocket science or anything. I ran into this much more when I lived in the city and less so where I live now which is more rural.
