re: #241 jaunte

The Catholic bishops are trying to bully forward through politics an anti-contraceptive policy that they have failed to sell to their own parishioners.

Unfortunately, at least so far, they seem to have the beltway pundit class on their side. That can be an extremely valuable echo chamber, especially when they mostly refuse to even cover the details. There just seems to be a whole lot of Catholic men among tv pundits, who seem generally progressive, but on this issue are siding heavily with the church. The Brooks & Shields discussion on the PBS news hour for example:

Shields, representing the left, refused to describe what was at issue or make a case for the policy. Instead it was all, “the fallout is cataclysmic” — “I say this as a Catholic” — “a policy that I think is, quite frankly, indefensible” — “I honestly don’t know why they did it” — “dissing Catholics.”
