I finally did watch the footage of the Cleveland police shooting, and I have to say that the only person responding to Rice who did things right was the person who called 911. He told the dispatcher that the gun was “probably fake” but the dispatcher never passed that information on to responding officers. Thus according to NBC News the cops thought they were on a genuine ‘gun run’.

Even so, that does make the way they just rolled up and fired justifiable. They could have pulled up further away and contained Rice while requesting backup. Instead, they came up right next to him and fired. That is in fact screwed up, and a huge failure.

My takeaway: The officer who fired needs to be fired and brought up on charges. The officer driving needs to be punished, but possibly not for homicide. The cops were in the wrong here, but how much so needs further investigation.
