Back then you only really had CBS, NBC and ABC - and they were essentially standalone entities not tied to a much larger parent unlike they are today as some subsidiary.

Today, with everything being so highly fragmented (and with the Internet to boot), it’s nearly impossible to do that.

Don’t forget that in today’s infotainment world, news is secondary - profit is first.
