To me, unconscious behaviour is not role playing, while conscious behaviour is a kind of role playing in that it is purposeful.

That’s a very odd definition of ‘roleplaying’. If someone consciously tries to be a good person, according to your definition, they’d be ‘roleplaying’. Your definition doesn’t really make any sense, especially in context.

It also doesn’t actually work at all, since you said that roleplaying is inherently phony— you’re now taking the completely fucking ridiculous position that all conscious behavior is ‘phony’.

This is a completely incoherent and contradictory explanation of what you meant.
