I don’t know what “alternate” version was available since the authors didn’t write any alternative song until 1990? And if there were schools changing the lyrics as written in 1967, then unless they had permission from the publisher to substitute certain words (not impossible), they would have been breaking the performance license.

I heard of one school where the administrators absolutely would not allow the performers so sing a song with the word “rape” in it, so they changed every instance of “rape” to “nap” (as in “kidnap”)

Yeah, this probably was in violation of their performance contract, but I never heard they got into trouble for it.
