I would say it was even worse among the slave owning class, who convinced themselves that keeping millions of people as chattel was actually good for them. Similar to Paul Ryan convincing himself that leaving people utterly destitute is good for them, only more evil.

It’s hard to say, but I don’t think the slave owning class believed their own propaganda the way that today’s Republicans do. The slaver owners’ reality was that they would do anything to preserve and extend slavery. That’s evil, of course, but it’s not a dissociation from reality itself.
