This terrific track from Mahalia Barnes and the Soul Mates (featuring blues mofo Joe Bonamassa) is dedicated to Donald Trump, after he called Hillary Clinton “such a nasty woman” in last night’s debate. It doesn’t get much nastier than this.

Mahalia Barnes & The Soul Mates featuring Joe Bonamassa Get Nasty On “Ooh Yea! – The Betty Davis Songbook” - EPK

Los Angeles, CA, December 17, 2014: Powerhouse singer Mahalia Barnes, one of the most impressive female vocalists to come out of Australia, and her band The Soul Mates have teamed up with American blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa to release an album of Betty Davis covers called Ooh Yea! – The Betty Davis Songbook. Scheduled for release on February 24, 2015, it explores tracks from Davis’ sexy, raw funk records of the early ‘70s.

Betty Davis’s unique story is still fairly unknown. She married Miles Davis in the late ‘60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix. Later, she released three genre-busting albums, 1973’s self-titled debut, 1974’s They Say I’m Different and 1975’s Nasty Gal that have since influenced artists like Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, Ice Cube, Talib Kweli and Ludacris.

Mahalia Barnes, eldest daughter of Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes and recent contestant on The Voice, has been around music her whole life but has always been most heavily influenced by soul, blues and rock n’ roll. Throughout the years she was exposed to Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Ike + Tina and later, became enthralled with artists like Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder as well as grittier singers like Ann Peebles, Betty Lavette and Betty Davis.

Last year, Mahalia was in the studio with her dad and internationally acclaimed super-producer, Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Journey, Divinyls), when she played Kevin some Betty Davis tracks as a reference. It was then that the idea to record the album Ooh Yea! – The Betty Davis Songbook was born.

“I have been a fan of Betty Davis for years now,” said Barnes. “I can remember the first time I heard her stuff, I was hooked! She is wild, free, nasty, raw, funky, intense, powerful and sexy. I love the instrumentation, I love the backing vocals. I’ve always wanted to make a record that sounds like what she was doing.”

Ambitious? Undoubtedly. Left of center? Perhaps. But the result? Nothing short of spectacular. Tackling some of Betty’s all-time greatest tracks, it’s safe to say that Mahalia holds her own… and then some! Kevin Shirley enlisted Bonamassa to lend his skills on the record. Heralded as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, Bonamassa soars on this album.

In addition to Barnes on vocals and tambourine and Bonamassa on guitar, the album features The Soul Mates players Franco Raggatt (guitar), Clayton Doley (organ, piano), Lachlan Doley (clav, rhodes), Ben Rodgers (bass), David Hibbard (drums), Yanya Boston (congas), and backing vocalists Darren Percival, Jade MacRae, and Juanita Tippins. It was recorded live over three days at Freight Train Studios in Sydney, Australia. It will be released on J&R Adventures, the independent label founded by Bonamassa and his longtime manager and business partner Roy Weisman.

“Making this album was a real joy. I love the realness. Recording it the way we did kept it really exciting and raw - no tricks or fix ups, old school and real. A perfect take is one that means something and feels great,” said Barnes.

Ooh Yea The Betty Davis Song Book is certainly Mahalia’s most ambitious and prodigious work to date. It’s a record of songs with passion, feeling, power and grit that celebrates one of the most progressive voices of funk and R&B.

Do yourself a favor and listen. You won’t regret it.

So I wonder what Trump will say during his speech at the Al Smith dinner. I can’t imagine Trump being able to deliver a lighthearted, funny speech versus using his speech as a way to go after that “nasty woman”. Should be interesting in a face palm kind of way.

The study found about 1 in 8 records out of date, mostly because voters had moved since they last voted. -2

The study found no evidence of voter fraud, either due to out-of-date records or deceased individuals still on the rolls. -3

Lastly, there was no evidence of non-citizen voter registration or voting found. -4

Hey, kids, the Donny & Billy show is back! This one shows Trump attempting (sort of) to commit voter fraud.

A video showing Donald Trump being turned away by multiple polling sites in 2004 made the rounds on social media Thursday in the wake of the candidate’s refusal to say that he will accept losing the presidential race.

The video, from an episode of NBC’s “Access Hollywood,” shows Trump trying to vote while being followed by recently ousted “Today” host Billy Bush.
The business mogul gets turned away by two different polling sites because his name isn’t on their voter rolls, apparently a mix up over his son, Donald Trump Jr., changing his address.

After being told by the first polling site to go to a different location, a visibly angry Trump responds, “OK, I like that location better. It’s a richer location.”

Haven’t seen this posted yet. Gov LaPage calls Donald Trumps election comments “An absolutely stupid move”.

Even Paul LePage, the controversial governor of Maine who has drawn comparisons to Donald Trump for his loud rhetoric and habit of disparaging the press, is harping on the Republican nominee for his refusal to commit to conceding if he loses the November election.
“Not accepting the results, I think, is just a stupid comment,” LePage said on a Maine radio station on Thursday, responding to Trump’s comments at the third presidential debate. “I mean, c’mon. Get over yourself.”

I’m still playing mind games with the concept of Trump not accepting that he loses the election. In my alt-reality he sets up a “Government in Exile”, compares himself to several Popes and eventually living as an even more embittered old man in a gilded mansion deep in the woods. His few remaining staff members tolerate his abusive tirades out of sheer habit. My mental drama in 3 acts ends with him attempting to login to his accounts, only to find that Russian hackers have disabled and deleted them all.

1) In the next few years, a really well-done movie is done about the late state prion disease infecting the Republican party, concluding with a TrumpBunker scene with Trump losing it in his Trump Tower penthouse suite on election night as the magnitude of his loss sinks in.

2) Trumpdammerung parody videos become as popular on-line as the Downfall parodies.

It’s hard to say, but I don’t think the slave owning class believed their own propaganda the way that today’s Republicans do. The slaver owners’ reality was that they would do anything to preserve and extend slavery. That’s evil, of course, but it’s not a dissociation from reality itself.

I had Facebook arguments with two Trump supporters tonight, both over Hillary’s ‘four minutes’ comment last night.

I posted links to a Bloomberg article (from September) and a UN paper (from 2012) that both contained the same information regarding launch response.

The first told me that because he doesn’t see ‘anything official’ from the Pentagon, that means she dropped classified information.

The other apparently served in the Navy with a friend of mine, and he told me my proof was invalid because I never served in the military.

And what would that reason be, pray tell?

One run open. Hundreds of riders flying down the *one run,* the white ribbon of death. It’s like an L.A. freeway at 5:30 p.m. except it’s skiers and snowboarders and it’s the first day anybody’s been out on snow since April or May. It’s a shitshow. Oh, and the lift line is 20+ minutes every ride.

Not worth it.

It’s hard to say, but I don’t think the slave owning class believed their own propaganda the way that today’s Republicans do. The slaver owners’ reality was that they would do anything to preserve and extend slavery. That’s evil, of course, but it’s not a dissociation from reality itself.

Of course they believed it, every word of it. They founded a whole religion on it. That’s where Southern Baptists came from.

Of course they believed it, every word of it. They founded a whole religion on it. That’s where Southern Baptists came from.

A political movement saying that God is on its side and founding or dividing churches accordingly is business as usual. Since God is conveniently inaccessible, no conflict with reality can arise.

Today we have millions of Republican voters who would make a fetish of affirming that 2+2 = 5 if their thought leaders were to tell them it will piss off liberals.

My oldest son found a copy of this book, Is the Homosexual My Neighbor?, at a Planned Parenthood book sale in Des Moines. It was published in 1978. The person who wrote it was attempting to make the case that homosexuality was compatible with Christianity. There are two other editions. The 1994 update talks about gays in the military.

I was on the road for work all afternoon and trying to avoid listening to NPR and rebroadcasts of the debate.

I found my favorite little small town radio station that will play anything. The playlist while I could get it was:

Journey - Wheel In The Sky
Hank Williams - Lovesick Blues
Roger Miller - Dang Me
(10 minutes of grain and livestock reports)
Deep Purple - Woman From Tokyo
Miles Davis - (didn’t know title but it was wonderful)

Then dead air. I hung on for a while to see what happened but gave up. They were drifting out of range anyway. First time I ever found that station they went straight from a hard-core delta blues song into ‘Do The Hustle’ by Van McCoy. I don’t know how they survive (they’re a commercial station), but it’s fun to have them around for drives up north.
