In a related notion, the idea of gun-free zones around schools and other designated institutions is also meant to impose enhanced penalties. That too is used to get defendants to plead out to lesser includeds, or impose harsher sentencing if the person has been found guilty.

gun-free/drug-free zones sound like a good idea. Don’t think they’ve worked too well.
