I can be critical of individual actions and still see the bigger picture. Jefferson owned slaves, should we throw him under a bus because that action (which was immoral but legal at the time) wipes out all the good he did?

There is no such thing as a perfect human being.

You can state the bad when you state the good and do no tossing under any vehicles. But always be clear that there was bad. To leave that out tosses those he abused under a large, group mode of conveyance.
