I apparently have gotten out there on this.
I thought that “Cut the Muster ” , referred to passing military inspection & that “Mustard”, is just a misusage in that context.

I don’t know. Cut the muster sure makes a lot more sense to me in the context that it’s generally intended in.
If you fail to cut or pass muster it means your are, so to speak, eliminated from consideration. At least IMHO……
