Geez, isn’t it enough to just say: We think that this comes out best using butter or lard and so that is what we recommend, but for those who need it we have provided this recipe with vegetable shortening.

The editorializing is what takes it over the line. And also the use of the word retarded, if that’s in the author’s version. I would never buy anything by them again.

Baking sounds kind of good though.

She didn’t really say “retarded” but she did strongly suggest that she thinks people who bake with Crisco should not be using her cookbook.
