While we’re doing all this constitutional conventioning, we might well ask why a country this size need 51+ states to administer it, given 21st Cent technology an’ all. A dozen regions could better manage it.

I wouldn’t doubt for a second that if there were a convention, that there would immediately be movements in at least California and Texas arguing for independence. Probably Hawaii and Alaska as well.

As far as combining states and/or redrawing lines, it’d be incredibly complicated, but possible.
